Frequently Asked Questions

What can herbal medicine treat?

Herbal Medicine is used to support people suffering from a wide range of problems.  It can be used to treat acute self-limiting illness, such as colds and flu.  Herbalists usually work with more ongoing chronic conditions.  Please book your free discovery call here to find out how herbs can help you.

Can I self-treat with herbs?

Yes, absolutely!  Herbs are a great way to manage minor self-limiting illnesses such as coughs and colds.  However, where a problem is severe, ongoing or complex it is best to seek professional help.

How long does herbal treatment last?

This will vary but expect to have at least 3 months of treatment to really evaluate how well herbal medicine is working for you.  Some people may only require a few months treatment whilst others require ongoing maintenance support.  We will discuss this during your first consultation.

Can I take herbs alongside other prescribed medication?

Some herbs and drugs can interact and so if you are taking medications you must always check with your GP, herbalist or pharmacist whether it is safe to do so.  When you consult a professional Medical Herbalist they will know which herbs to avoid for any medications that you are on.

How are the herbal remedies taken?

I usually use herbal tinctures which are preparations of herbs in alcohol.  These are usually taken 2 or 3 times daily in a little water.  I may also use capsules, herbal teas, oils, and creams.

Can I take herbs whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?

It is best to avoid any medications whilst pregnant if at all possible.  Some herbal remedies are contraindicated during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.  Always speak to your GP, herbalist, midwife or pharmacist before using herbal remedies.

I cannot take alcohol, can I still have herbal remedies?

Yes.  I usually use remedies that contain alcohol.  However, if for any reason you avoid alcohol then I can find alternatives for you.

I have allergies. Can I still use herbal medicine?

Yes you can.  If you have any allergies to medications, foods or plants please let me know.  I screen for this question during the initial consultation.

What happens during the free discovery call?

The free call lasts for 15 to 30 minutes.  It is done online using zoom or google meet.  I send a link an hour before our appointment.

It is an informal chat where we can discuss how herbal medicine may be of benefit.  I will refer you to see your GP, if I feel that is necessary.

I use a password to ensure our call is secure and confidential.  A guardian must be present for children under 16 years old.

You are under no obligation to go ahead with herbal treatment.  If I do not think it will be beneficial then I will tell you that during our call.
